This is a tasting in a case - a genuinely wide selection of red wines ranging in style from light and fruity Pinot Noir to more complex Corvina with spices, cherries and pleasingly gentle tannins (Corvina is the main grape in Amarone). Merlot and Shiraz have wide appeal; Smart Dog is mainly Shiraz but has some native Portuguese Trincadeira to add interest and if you haven’t tried Cabernet Franc you should (and here’s your chance!) - it’s the lighter cousin on Cabernet Sauvignon - think raspberry rather than blackcurrant.
This case contains the following:
1 x Les Argelieres, Cabernet Franc, Pays d'Oc, France
Aromas of green peppercorns and delicate smoke on the nose are centred around a core of ripe blackberry fruit and wild berries. A spicy finish with decent length and well balanced acidity. Grapes: 100% Cabernet Franc
1 x Les Anges Pinot Noir, Loire, France
This delightful French pinot noir boasts a beautiful garnet colour with purplish reflections. Notes of fresh red fruits (strawberries, blackberries) and floral nuances greet the nose. Round, succulent and supple berry flavours suggest that the wine is ready for immediate enjoyment.
1 x Cantina di Negrar Corvina Verona, Italy
Bright, ruby red in colour with garnet reflections. Black cherry fruit with a spicy vanilla note. Soft and rounded on the palate, sweet, ripe tannins and a spicy finish.
1 x Smart Dog Syrah, Alentejo, JP Ramos, Portugal
An intense floral-scented, cherry-bright fragrance, that delivers a satisfyingly juicy, smooth and mouth-filling palate of chocolate, dark berries and sweet spice.
1 x Wide River Shiraz, Robertson, South Africa
Hints of cinnamon and freshly ground black pepper with lots of brambly fruit and rich mulberries and well integrated vanilla.
1 x Rio del Mar, Merlot Bodegas Arlequin, Chile
Elegant aromas of ripe fruits. On the palate, round and nicely balanced, soft tannins, with notes of cherries, ripe plums and hints of cocoa with an excellent finish.
