Our Story

With 33 years of being part of the wine trade we offer a passionate and educated collection of wines.  Formerly known as Steevenson Wines which was originally established in 1987 by Charles Steevenson. He starting as small high street wine shop in Tavistock, Devon and grew the the company to now one of the best leading and respected wine merchant wholesalers in the south west of England. We now import wines from all around the world, we only pick quality wines from what we think are the best producers & winemakers from around the world.

In 2020 Charles sold the company to his Operations Manager Michael McGarry, who worked for Charles a decade before taking over. Now the company has been rebranded to Sovereign Wines. Supplying some of the finest hotels and restaurants in the south west of England, which is all distributed form our warehouse and shop in Tavistock, Devon. We work closely with all our customers to achieve the perfect compliment of wines.  

We thoroughly believe in the following 3 key points which is our ethos of the business.

1. Quality - We source products that we believe are of the highest quality, and we regularly check vintages and taste compared to maintain our standards.

2. Service Excellence - We have many years experience in the industry to draw on and can offer advice on all aspects of your business development when it comes to 'on' and 'off-trade' sales.

3. Personal Connection - We like to get to know our customers so we can tailor our services to their needs - and we love getting to know who we are working with!

We have just recently opened a retail shop and tasting room in Tavistock where you can get advice or help  pairings of wines with food. We regularly taste and we forge connections with all our customers and with our producers we support.

Mike's connection with the Steevenson family go as far back to when he was a teenager as Liam Steevenson Master of Wine, went to school together. So there decades of history and Mike continues to work closely with Liam and supports his wine making and agency business. We look forward to Liam's next adventure in creating more beautiful wines.
